Tagging Your Community

Introduce yourself by telling a story about a place near your school. Put this story in a marker on a map that is being shared by other students in the Personal Learning Space and Youth Voices.

Begin by writing about these questions:

  • What places in your community are special to you?
  • What stories can you tell about these places?
  • Would these stories be what people expect someone from your community to write? Or would they be surprised?
  • How will reading your story and knowing about your special place help a young person at another school relate to your life and get to know you?

Create a Map on Tagzania

  1. Register at Tagzania.com (Email recommended, but not required.)
  2. Search for the community or area around your school, using the search box in the top right corner. There are many ways to do this.
    Choose one of the following:
    • Search for this tag: youthmap. If your teacher has already created a map with a marker for your school and has added the tag youthmap, then when you search with that tag, you will find youthmap listed on the right under "All Tagzania Locations" on the right side. Click on youthmap, then you should see the title of your school in the left column. Click on the title of your school, and you will come to a map that shows the area around your school. Put a check in the box: add an item on click. Find the place where you want to place your marker (or get close), click, then click Post a new item.
    • Search for this tag: Name of Your School (for example Judge Memorial High School or Eleanor Roosevelt High School). Your school should come up as a link on the left side, unless it hasn't been listed with Geonames yet. Click on the title of your school, and you will come to a map that shows the area around your school. Put a check in the box: add an item on click. Find the place where you want to place your marker (or get close), click, then click Post a new item.
    • Search for the exact address of your school or the place you want to put a marker. Write your address like these examples: 233 S Wacker Dr 7200, Chicago, IL 60606, 51 James St., Perth AU, Berlin, Berlin US, 94043 US
    • Go directly to the map. Click Post, which on a tool bar on the top right. Click Point, then click Go directly to the map... Zoom and navigate on the map on the map to find a location.
  3. Fill in all four boxes, and save.
    • Your title should be short, it should include the name of the place, AND it should show how you feel about it. For example: Crotona Park Rocks!
    • Your desc (description) is not optional for this project. This is where you put your story that only you can tell about this place.
    • In resources you should list a URL's (http://LikeThis.com) for each image or website that you want to appear in your marker. Please read the directions under the more info link.
    • Your tags must include: youthmap | InitialsForYourSchool (for example: ERHS, JMHS) | ThreeOtherSpecificKeywords (No commas, no separate words)
  4. Make sure the red marker is exactly where you want it. You can move it and click restore.

Put your map on your profile page.

1. Go to the specific page that displays just your description and your point on the map. The URL should look something like this: http://www.tagzania.com/item/57048.
2. Copy this code:
<a href="http://www.tagzania.com/item/######">A special place in my community</a>.
3. Go to your Profile page on YouthVoices or the Personal Learning Space, and Click Edit this profile. Then find the Brief description box.
4. Paste the code from #2, and replace the http://www.tagzania.com/item/###### with the URL for your specific page that displays just your description and your point on the map in Tagzania.
5. Make Public, and Save.
